You are not alone! A large number of patients are nervous to different degrees about coming in for dental treatment. There are ways we can effectively manage anxiety to achieve great outcomes for you.Why do I now need a crown and not just a filling?

Very large fillings are likely to be weak, unstable and to leak over time leading to recurrent decay and replacement with even larger fillings. This process of patching or replacing already large fillings is what we call “patchwork dentistry”. In most situations, patchwork dentistry ultimately leads to the loss of the tooth, or at minimum to very expensive methods of repair. A crown can strengthen a weakened tooth and help to give it the best long term strength and prognosis.

Dental radiographs (x-rays) show the structures of your teeth and mouth that cannot be seen visually during your clinical examination. We routinely take x-rays every 2-3 years to check for decay. Some areas of your teeth have thicker outer enamel surfaces which can make detection of decay very difficult. X-rays also allow us to see the very early signs of periodontal disease which means we can start treatment early, preventing toothaches, early loss of teeth and any associated future costs to you.

From time to time there are other more specific reasons to take an x-ray, for example, infection or to check on wisdom teeth. Our digital dental x-ray system requires ever smaller radiation doses however, we never take them unnecessarily.

We strongly recommend you visit us every six months for a dental assessment, including a professional clean. By maintaining regular visits, we can identify any problems before they escalate into bigger issues and ensure your oral hygiene is being well maintained. By visiting regularly, you will save time, money and hassle in the long run.

It is very difficult to make any assessment of the cost of dental treatment until the dentist has seen the patient. At your check-up or consultation visit your dentist will normally prepare a treatment plan for you if further work is required and this will be as close as possible to what they expect to do. It is important to bear in mind that changes may be necessary after treatment is commenced for example although we can tell if decay is present from an x-ray its true extent may not be apparent until the dentist begins to treat the tooth.

It is never too early to start taking your child to the dentist. So many adults have issues or phobias surrounding going to the dentist, so it is important to educate your child that going to the dentist is nothing to worry about. By introducing them to the sights, sounds and smells of the surgery from an early age, we hope to ensure that as they grow older they are happy to keep coming here.

Often a ride in the chair, or a sticker or activity will ensure your child wants to come again. This also means that the dentist is able to monitor your child’s dental health every step of the way
